In every successful Chelsea side in the Abramovich era the Blues have characteristically had a physical bullish striker leading the line. The iconic Didier Drogba who terrorised defenders for fun, his incredible strength, athleticism and finishing ability made him almost irreplaceable and on his day he was simply unstoppable. His legendary big game performances made the Stamford Bridge faithful fall in love with the him. His unforgettable Champions League final performance will be remembered forever. After Drogba's success Chelsea were hungry for more, one of the most hated players of his generation came along. Although hated by almost every opposition team the Chelsea fans adored Diego Costa. Bought from Atletico Madrid for the beginning of the 14/15 season Costa optimised everything one could ask for in a striker. The Brazilian born Spaniard was intense and aggressive in his game and boy did he love scoring goals, with 52 goals in 89 Premier League appearances Costa was a great success, and after his triumphs Chelsea struggled to find a replacement.
First in came Alvaro Morata who was extremely inconsistent for the London club and was quickly sold back to Atletico Madrid. Morata had his moments but his physique and play style was not suited to the Premier League's physicality. After Morata's failure Olivier Giroud stepped in, who of course as any football fan should know is an exceptional player. Giroud like Drogba scored multiple big goals, scoring 2 and assisting 2 against Arsenal in the Europa league final and also providing the most goals in Chelsea's champions league winning campaign, with crucial goals against Rennes and Atletico Madrid. However, he did not score enough goals to propel the football club back to championship winning heights.
As a transfer ban loomed in the 19/20 season Chelsea looked towards their academy for a solution scoring 15 goals in his debut season Tammy Abraham looked like the real deal, Fast forward to the 20/21 season Abraham lacked game time and seemed unable to prove his worth to Tuchel. After a glorious Champions League winning campaign Chelsea were ambitious and thirsty for more instant success, the only thing missing? A world class striker. With the attacking market being very short of reasonable options Chelsea began to pursue Lukaku who Inter claimed was 'untouchable'. With Lukaku's love for the club and Tuchel's willingness and desire to win this transfer was a no brainer.
Standing at 6'3 in height with a wide and concrete structure Lukaku is the exact kind of striker that thrives at Chelsea Football Club. Starting away at a London rival is no easy feat however, Lukaku looked at home. An instant impact was made, Lukaku's hold up play and awareness allowed Chelsea to engage with Arsenal higher up the pitch, it also increased the space in behind the Arsenal defence making them increasingly vulnerable. Movement, unpredictability, finishing Lukaku has it all. Chelsea fans felt refreshed to see a player with such class lead the line for the club. After multiple seasons in a row where Chelsea were fighting for top 4 this season is different with the Belgian beast upfront. The blues look like a formidable force, and with Tuchel in charge and a player with Lukaku's quality in their team 9/2 odds on Chelsea winning the league is not looking too bad.
